Trans Pride Keychain
Tablet weaving is an Iron Age method of creating sturdy trims, bands, and belts by twisting threads around one another using tablets or cards with multiple holes. The patterns made with this technique can be surprisingly complex! This particular pattern is a recreation of the trim on the sleeve of Bertille of Chelles, a French abbess who died in the late 7th or early 8th century CE.
One of the great pleasures of practicing traditional crafts is combining old and new—here, a pattern from the past giving a message for the present moment. Trans lives matter, and have mattered since long before Bertille ran her abbey or tablet weaving was invented.
